On October 13, 2023, JAXA astronaut Koichi Wakata visited Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech) and paid a courtesy call on President Mitani before giving a lecture at GYMLABO on the Tobata Campus. This visit and lecture were made possible with the support of JAXA in recognition of Kyutech's significant contribution to the International Space Station (ISS) program, where it operates one of the largest numbers of artificial satellites among academic institutions worldwide. The event was held as part of the curriculum for second-year students in the Department of Space Systems Engineering. About 190 Japanese and international students studying space systems engineering gathered in anticipation to hear from the revered astronaut, creating an atmosphere filled with excitement.
Astronaut Wakata, who embarked on his record-breaking fifth space mission last October, spent more than five months on the ISS until March this year. During his stay, he launched three artificial satellites developed by Kyutech on December 2, 2022.
In his speech, astronaut Wakata shared insights in English his recent mission, which included his first EVA and the collection of basic data for future Mars exploration. He delivered a motivational message to the students: "Thought and action contribute to the progress of mankind. Japanese people will continue to advance toward the Moon and eventually Mars. I encourage you to accept challenges without fear.” His words were greeted with resounding applause.
After the lecture, many questions were asked by the students, and Wakata patiently answered them in both Japanese and English. This lecture succeeded in inspiring the students to dream and cultivate a passion for space. Kyutech is committed to further strengthening its cooperation in various fields not limited to the space industry, and to providing opportunities for students to pursue their aspirations, thus playing a key role in cultivating valuable talents for a wide range of social sectors.
